I would like to introduce our Teach a Teacher nonprofit to you in hopes that you might be interested in helping us. First, I’d like to apologize beforehand for this explanation, but …. here goes! I remember many years ago an old Kung Fu episode on television when Master Po told Grasshopper (David Carradine) “Grasshopper, to fight injustice here, is to fight injustice everywhere.” That line stuck with me over the years and that analogy may be applied to many issues in life. I (attempt) to use this analogy regarding education. To educate here (in Peru) is the start for reform in the quality of life for real people. Injustice?
My wife was a former teacher in the US for many years. We now live in Peru. Education in this country is not their highest priority. The really short explanation is ….. We at Teach a Teacher, have Volunteer Teachers come to Peru and provide Professional Development and help teachers with basic teaching skills and follow up training. Many of the teachers here have no teaching certifications and have limited training and work with few resources.
As with many of the educational professionals in the states, I believe we will all agree that much of the educational system is a mess … for a myriad of reasons. My personal opinion is that government (for the most part) should stay out of education and let professional educators (teachers) do what they know … Teach.
If sometimes you feel like you’re fighting a no win battle, tired of the bureaucracy etc, and you truly love and have a passion to Teach, come share your passion. Come to Peru and Volunteer with us for a week or two. We have an audience of Teachers here that truly want to learn so that they may teach. Education starts with good teachers. Many of the Teachers we work with teach in a two room school to a range of ages. What grade level does she teach? How would you teach and inspire with this group? Keep in mind you have little training and few resources. Are you just a low wage baby sitter or do you try? Would you jump at the chance to learn and make a difference in these lives? Their answer is a greatful … Yes!
